My Job Shadow at Hwang Grace E MD
Today, I had the pleasure to job shadow Dr. Grace Hwang over at Hwang Grace E MD in Porterville. Although Pediatrics isn’t related to my school pathway in any way, it’s one of my choices for when I go off to college and decide what I want to major in. I chose to job shadow a Pediatrician because I absolutely love working with kids and I have a strong desire to help people, so what better way is there other than being a Pediatrician. |
When I first got there, I notified the nurse that I was there to job shadow Dr. Hwang and she welcomed me to the back to wait for her. I got there 30 minutes early so I was waiting for quite a while. I was nervous to say the least, with my social anxiety and all. Dr. Hwang finally arrived and I waited for her to freshen up and get ready for her day in the office. Once she got ready to start her day, my job shadow began.
First she had me sit down while she fixed things with her nurse, Emily. Then we got to the interview. I asked her the questions needed to complete the question form that’s required for the senior project. After a while she called me back into her office and asked me questions about myself. Then she asked me if that was all I needed but I added that I had to follow her for about an hour or two. I don’t know whether she was too busy or if she’s really confidential with her work, but she only allowed me to see 2 patients. Although I only saw two patients, that was enough for me to know that this career is one I really want to pursue in the future.
It was only about 2 hours that I was with Dr. Hwang, but I did get a great deal of information from her regarding the road to becoming a Pediatrician. She informed me that I should be looking for schools that offer biology majors instead of focusing on schools that have pre-med programs. She also confirmed that it will take me 12 long years in order to finally be a licensed doctor. One thing that I liked about Dr. Hwang was that she didn’t overbook patients like most doctors do, and the visits were quick and straightforward. I also liked how great she was with children and I can tell that she cares about building a relationship with her patients. There was nothing that I disliked about the job shadow except how short it was. I wish there would have been more time for me to see what she does.
Two patient meetings were enough to make me believe that this is a career I really want to pursue and I believe that those 12 extra-long years of school will be worth it at the end if I do end up taking on this challenging career. Today’s experience made my hear swell with happiness and made my love for children grow even more. I want my future career to be something I will enjoy getting up in the morning for. Although being a Pediatrician is a time demanding job, I do believe I will do my absolute best to become one and will love doing it every single day of my life.
